Ban Ta Klang Elephant Village
At Ban Ta Klang, elephants are raised not just as working animals, but as beloved family members. Villagers share their homes under the same roof with their elephants, creating an extraordinary and unbreakable bond between human and animal.
Located in Tambon Krapho, Tha Tum District, the village is surrounded by picturesque rice fields and sparse woodlands, making it an ideal environment for raising elephants. The local residents are predominantly of Kuy (Kui or Suai) ethnicity, renowned historically for their expertise in tracking, training, and caring for wild elephants. In the past, villagers traditionally journeyed to the Cambodian border area for elephant-tracking. Although modern international border policies have changed these ancient practices, the people of Ban Ta Klang proudly continue to raise and train elephants, participating annually in Surin’s famous Elephant Round-up.
When visiting Ban Ta Klang, travelers can witness these unique traditional elephant shelters firsthand, immerse themselves in the rich culture of the Kuy people, and chat with experienced mahouts. The village also houses the expansive Surin Elephant World, spanning over 500 rai as one of the world’s largest elephant conservation centers. It serves as an educational hub and features 8 diverse zones, including an elephant performance stadium, elephant bathing pools, an observation tower, a theater, a museum, and jungle trekking options (ranging from standard walks to adventurous trails).
